The aims of a life must seek to fulfill the basic physical needs of the human condition; procurement of food, clothing and shelter
Survival of the organism is the most basic cause of anxiety.
In the modern world, these articles can only be obtained by purchase.
The human condition is social as well as personal.
Dharma is the fulfillment of the desire to be true to oneself and to be of service to others.
In a harmonious society there are many roles which can be assumed so that both the individual and society may together grow towards health.
The third aim of life is met if one?s chosen role is also who one truly is. Doing one?s own thing, if honorable, profitable and enjoyable is the ideal circumstance.
When the 3 aims of life discussed above have been fulfilled they are no longer compelling; there is a desire for something else.
The desire is to be free from the 3 aims of life; in other words, to be free from worldly desires and navigate ?otherworldly? concerns.
One aims to contemplate and understand the nature of existence in which everyone is compelled to do or be something in order to feel useful, loved and accomplished.
Finally, one may come to a peace which is not connected to anything or any work or any person but only the Self.
The Self is free from desire and aversion; this peace is the fourth aim of life.
At different times in life, each of the 4 aims may be more or less compelling and being able to discern this and take proper action is a powerful way to create and maintain health.
In fact, every single action performed while satisfying all 4 aims creates optimum health.
With this, Ayurvedic Medicine enables a move away from a superficial understanding of health to one that has depth and wholeness
Probably the hardest part of setting goals is the first step of actually deciding to take action!
The main hurdle that most people face is the incorrect assumption that goals are only for business or sales-minded people.
The reality is everyone subconsciously sets goals throughout their day.
There are always occasions where something has to be done at a particular time or place.
Simple examples could be getting up at a certain time in order to be at work, or to meet with a friend for a leisure activity.
After years of sales meetings, one small statement made me realize that this process is as natural as breathing.
The beauty of having goals is the uniqueness of each one to the person setting the goal.
They are very specific to them and their circumstances whether in the area of business, financial, personal or spiritual.
The most important part initially, is to write them down.
Having the goals written down gives incredible power and focus to your efforts.
Aim for something that will stretch you whilst remaining achievable.
f the goal is achieved too easily it is not high enough to make any significant change in your life and needs to be adjusted.
On the other hand, if you consistently miss the goal, re-evaluate and consider setting it a little lower as you will probably get discouraged and give up.
The aim is to keep growing, and moving into a more satisfactory position for your circumstances.
The goal should be as specific as possible with a benefit of attaining it
Another good idea is to also have the result of not reaching the goal.
This will strengthen your resolve to take the necessary action.
As you obtain the levels that you have set for yourself always include a small reward at each point.
This will only need to be a small treat in the beginning, such as a meal out or a weekend vacation.
Remember that these changes will not take place overnight and there will be a period of time when nothing seems to be happening.
This is why the goals need to be detailed and as specific as possible with a consequence and a benefit.
Allow some time on a daily basis to educate yourself on how to make the necessary adjustments in your life. This could include listening to a cd or reading a book on motivation etc.
There is an enormous amount of resources available to anyone looking for help in this area.
A simple method to start with could be one goal in the main areas of life to be achieved in one month, six months, one year and five years. Break that down further into a daily, weekly and monthly plan
A person has two main aims in life: 1. to keep himself safe from harm, and 2. to achieve something good
As a matter of necessity "Keeping safe from harm" takes precedence over "getting something good
This "keeping safe" from what is harmful and evil however, would be different for different living beings, depending on the maturity and complexity of their creation.
Even among the human race which is seen as the most mature creation on earth the concept of safety and achievement would be different for different individuals depending on one's understand- ing of what is evil and harmful for him and what he considers as good.
Every sensible person recognises that this life would eventually lead to one of the two consequences, success (safety from evil, and achieving the good) or failure;
therefore every sensible person must answer the following questions before deciding his route to safety and achievement, and must answer them now lest he dies before tomorrow comes for him.
Have you ever seen a chair, or a table, or a car being made by itself?
If not, what about a man, does man have any control over the process of his birth?
Have you ever seen a man who has created himself outside his mother's womb?
Not even the mother who carries the child in her womb knows how food and oxygen reaches her child
neither does she have any control over it, let alone the control over if the child will be free of defects and will be born alive.
Then what about the tree which grows from a seed, shadows which move through a set rule every day, the day and night following each other and the creation of the earth, sky, stars, moon and the sun.
