1. God Loves You!

The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life"

The problem is that

2. All of us have done, said or thought things that are wrong. This is called sin, and our sins have separated us from God.

The Bible says "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from God forever. The Bible says "The wages of sin is death."

The good news is that, about 2,000 years ago,

3. God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins.

Jesus is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. "God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us."

Jesus rose from the dead and now He lives in heaven with God His Father. He offers us the gift of eternal life -- of living forever with Him in heaven if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me."

God reaches out in love to you and wants you to be His child. "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name." You can choose to ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and come in to your life as your Lord and Savior.

4. If you want to accept Christ as Savior and turn from your sins,

you can ask Him to be your Savior and Lord by praying a prayer like this:

"Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you in to my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior. I want to serve you always."

According to one humorist, "God always answers prayer. Sometimes it is "Yes" and sometimes "No." Other times it's "Wait a while." And sometimes, "You've got to be kidding!"

I'm sure God has a sense of humor, too, and must have various reactions to some of our prayers. Some approach God as if he were a "Father-Christmas-in-the-sky" with their "gimme, gimme, gimme" requests. Others come to God as if they were using some kind of "divine Aladdin's lamp" wanting to have their every whim and wish fulfilled.

Many, however, come to God with the right motive. The prayers of these people are the ones that God hears, honors, and answers. One such prayer is recorded in the Bible. It was by an almost unknown man whose name was Jabez. He prayed, "Oh that you would bless me wonderfully. Please be with me in all that I do. Greatly expand my borders. And keep me from all evil and disaster."1

Apparently Jabez prayed with the right motive because God heard and answered his prayer. Praying with the right motive is one of the keys for getting prayer answered. James, the brother of Jesus, said, "You have not because you don't ask. And when you do ask, you ask with the wrong motive."2

Another key for effective prayer is praying truthfully. As David wrote in the Psalms, "The Lord is near to all who call on him?to all who call on him in truth."3

I recently read about one woman's near-death experience. Whether this was real or imagined, I don't know but I liked her visual concept of prayer. She "saw" herself in heaven and, looking back at earth, saw many beams of light reaching up to God. These, in her mind, represented the prayers of God's people.

I also like to "see" my prayers as a beam of light reaching up to God. Light is symbolic of truth and it is the prayers that come from the heart?that are honest and real?that go beyond the ceiling and reach upward to God and get answered.

Sometimes when I pray for a friend, I ask God to surround that person with a beam of light?like a search light beam?and show that person the way they need to go and lead them to the truth. I pray the same for myself.

And every day I like to pray the prayer of Jabez. I have done this for years and have seen it answered in an unprecedented way. It's in four simple parts.

First, "O that you would bless me wonderfully." The fact is God wants to bless every one of us wonderfully. He has a purpose for

each of us and when we live in harmony with that purpose, we automatically get in on God's blessings.

To do this, we first need to acknowledge that in God's sight we have all sinned and consequently, are separated from him, and need his forgiveness. Because God loves and wants to bless us, he gave his Son, Jesus, to pay the penalty for our sin (death) so we could be forgiven and given the gift of eternal life.

When we receive Jesus into our heart and life we are reconnected to God and can then receive his many blessings.*

In his book, Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby makes a simple but significant statement in that while it is important that we seek God's will for our life, it's much more important that we seek to discover God's will; that is, where he is working and what his plans are, and ask that we can be a part of his plans.

This is a certain way to experience God and receive his blessing.

Second, "Please be with me in all that I do." When we receive Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, we have his promise that he will never leave us

He said, "I will never leave you or forsake you."4 If this statement were translated literally, it would read, "Jesus said, 'I will never, never, never, never, never leave you or forsake you

'" However, when we ask God to be with us in everything we do, we need to make certain that everything we do is in harmony with his will and then we know that he will be with us.

Third, "Greatly expand my borders." Having prayed this prayer almost daily for years, as I look back over the past, it amazes me to see what God has done and how he has answered this prayer

In a compressed time capsule, we started ACTS literature outreach ministry in Adelaide, South Australia, in an extremely small way on a shoe-string budget with an old typewriter and a borrowed old-fashioned duplicating machine.

We began by mailing our first gospel message, "How to Be Sure You're a Real Christian," to high-school students in Adelaide, then to families throughout South Australia and then to families all over Australia.

ACTS then expanded to New Zealand and then to North America and has been used of God to share the gospel with millions of people around the world. And now throughout North America ACTS literature is being used by other organizations to touch the lives of thousands of business and professional people.

have just kept praying day after day, year in and year out, the prayer of Jabez and that I and ACTS would be a part of what God's plans and what he is doing in the world today.

Fourth, "Keep me from all evil, harm and disaster." Knowing my human frailty, I know that in my own strength I cannot live consistently in harmony with the will of God.

So every day I commit and trust my life to God and ask him to keep me from falling into evil or disaster.5

I encourage you to pray Jabez' prayer every day, too, for the rest of your life. If prayed with the right motive, you can be certain that God will hear and answer you just as he did Jabez.

Dark Night of the Soul

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God" (Luke 12:6, NIV).

William Cowper, poet and hymn writer, who lived from 1731-1800 in England, apparently suffered from fits of melancholy and frequent attacks of spiritual despair which led to two suicide attempts.

On one of these occasions during a time of deep despair and a dark night of the soul, on a foggy night he set out from his home in London with the intention of jumping into the River Thames to end his life.

He got hopelessly lost in the fog and wandered blind for some time. Eventually, lost and confused, he walked into a home to get out of the fog.

And the home he walked into? It was his own.

He sat down and penned the words of the beloved hymn:

God moves in a mysterious way

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

Dear reader, if you are going through a dark night of the soul right now and it feels that God is far away, be assured he is standing in the shadows and as he knows about every sparrow he knows all about you and he cares.

When we commit and trust our life to God every day, "Weeping may endure for the night, but joy will come in the morning"?even if it is eventually!

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, in my despair let me not grow weary in trusting you, but renew my faith and use my present pain to make me a better, stronger person so I can comfort others as they struggle through their journey of despair and pain.

Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."

Problem Solving

If anyone lacks wisdom, ask God who gives to all generously ... and it will be given to you."1

The following formula for resolving problems, I believe, came from Norman Vincent Peale. He said to visualize ... prayerize ... actualize.

Visualize. We need to see a problem for what it is, and usually what we see isn't the real problem at all.

Often it is the symptom of a deeper, hidden problem, the fruit of a hidden root! As somebody else said, "God is merciful. When we have unresolved personal problems, he gives us symptoms.

" Only as we see the cause of any problem can we ever resolve it. Once we do this, we need to visualize (see) what we need to do to overcome the problem as well as visualizing or seeing the final outcome.

ayerize. We also need to ask God to give us the wisdom and courage to see and confront the real cause of our problem.

pray realistically, not only by committing our problem to God and asking for his guidance to help to find a solution, but also to give us the courage to do our part.

Actualize. Finally, we need to realize that we are responsible for resolving our problems. No matter what happens to us, we are always responsible for our reactions, feelings, and what we do about resolving our problems.

God will give us wisdom if we ask for it, insight if we desire it, and courage if we need it, but he won't do for us what we can and need to do for ourselves.

If he did, it would keep us over-dependent and immature.

Accepting responsibility for our problems, emotions, behavior, and our life is the heart of adult maturity. As we do our part to overcome our difficulties, God will do his part.

As another has said, "God feeds the sparrows but he doesn't throw the food into their nests."

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, in all of life's difficulties help me to face reality and see my responsibility and what I can and need to do to overcome.

Please lead me to the help I need so to do. Also, help me to accept every problem as a challenge and opportunity to grow and thereby become a better, healthier and more loving person.

A View of the Heart

The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"1

Because of his amazing courage in the Battle of Lodi in 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte became know as "the little corporal." He was only five-feet-two-inches tall!

William Wilberforce was another small man who apparently never enjoyed good health.

For twenty years he was under a doctor's care.

More than any other person he was responsible for stopping the British slave trade

He was known for his eloquence and in 1780 entered the British Parliament at age 21.

Six years later he joined Thomas Clarkson, the anti-slave campaigner, and began his fight against slavery even though the bill to end the slave trade didn't become law until 1807?twenty-one years later.

Often in life, many of the greatest achievements have been accomplished by persons who have had a serious setback, a major limitation or handicap, or a significant failure of one kind or another, but have overcome their defect, and risen above their circumstances.

If you feel you have a shortcoming, be encouraged, the people God uses are ordinary people who make themselves available.
